Founded in 1749, Halifax is the birthplace of English Canada and the very core of the Halifax experience is its famous Central Commons. Laid out by His Majesty's Imperial Surveyors, the Central Commons was designed to be a literal landmark - with Robie Street, its northern edge, marking True North so the Commons could form the 'Rose' for a Provincial Compass of highways and routings. All four major highways converge at Robie and Chebucto-Cunard at the Central Commons’ edge.
